We shot this over a weekend in January 06. The nice people at Corporation of London film unit allowed us to take over Plough Place, behind the Sainsburys building in Holborn for the morning. We'd assembled various friends and relatives of the band as our extras, who not only turned up on time; at stupid o'clock on a Saturday morning, but took direction really well and were happy to walk up and down the street over and over again for two hours without complaining! At least not that we know of.
Once we'd finished with the extras we concentrated on the close ups of our actress, Xenia and Lou, Loopjoy's singer.
After lunch, we moved camp to one of the Barbican Towers in the City. We used a friends flat as our interior location. The towers are the highest residential block in the UK and we were about three floors from the top. The view from the balcony that runs around the flat was vertigo inducingly spectacular, especially at night with an uniterupted 30 mile panarama of London. The emergency stairs were similarly visually stunning, the view looking down the stairs had the appearance of a piece of op art dissappearing to infinity. Being an emergency staircase, we were unable to use a lot of lighting as this would've meant lots of stands and cables, so to compensate we had to shoot at 3 frames per second, meaning Xenia had to act four times slower! Not easy when you're walking up stairs.
On the Sunday we shot the band performance at Asylum Studios in Perivale, West London. To save time we shot with two cameras, the 435 from Panavision and MC2's Cyclops Motion Control rig whicomh we used for overheads, tracking shots and a 180 degree transition shot that would take over from Xenia in the Barbican.
