Zein Simone
again

Telecine Dave Ludlum

Zein contacted us via our web site in January, she needed a promo to accompany the release of her debut EP 'The Change' The treatment was fairly open, most importantly it would be a performance video using themes linked to the nature of the song. Zein gave us a few points of reference from previous promos we'd shot which helped us create an overall feel.

We shot over a weekend in early February, beginning bright and early on the Saturday morning by the lake at Virginia Water near Windsor and a couple of woodland locations nearby. The multi location stuff was kept down to a minimum crew with Yan performing DoP duties.

In the afternoon we moved on to Richmond to film the overhead of the car off of a friends balcony, as we decided hanging out of a tree with an Arri 3 far too cavalier.

From Richmond we moved to Wimbledon, to film the house and car interiors, both lit by George Theophanous. We had boarded two different versions for the closing sequence of the song. One was for a continuous track past the car, disolving from one person to the next, using a motion control mini rig, that was small enough to fit on a pavement without causing too much disruption. The other was to use a track and dolly and cut more traditionally from one occupant to the next, varying speeds and angles.

On Sunday we continued shooting our tableux at different locations around the City. This part of the shoot was designed and executed with military precision. We storyboarded and shot nine different tableux in total even though we only needed six for the cut. This gave us the option in the edit to provide different versions of the promo.

In the afternoon we moved to a rooftop in New Bond St and started dressing it to make it look like a roof garden for Zein's performance. The roof space was quite large but enclosed by chimney stacks and various interesting roof architecture, which gave us plenty of shelter. We were also extremely lucky with the weather. Robin Brigham achieved some wonderful effects using minimum, low key lighting, a decision in no way influenced by the fact that we had to lug the equipment up six flights of stairs!
